Amazon Visitor Landing

A to Z. Face to Face.

You know Amazon through a box on your doorstep. This experience is about the people who put it there.

We designed the Amazon Visitor Landing at HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia, to make the company’s culture legible to the public through space, not just messaging. How do you make a global company feel human at street level?

We began with the exterior. Animated window displays activate the sidewalk, pulling passersby into brief, unexpected encounters with Amazon’s products and services before they ever step inside. A wall of Leadership Principles anchors the entry, putting values into the architecture the way they live in the work itself. The smile connecting “A” to “Z” in the Amazon wordmark weaves across the interior and facade as a recurring motif that rewards attention.

Natural materials ground the space in something warmer than a brand environment. Wood paneling sourced from Amazon’s first Washington home traces a line from origin to present. Artwork referencing the Potomac riverbanks connects the building to its specific geography. A living wall introduces texture and vitality, with botanical diversity comparable to The Spheres in Seattle. We designed accessibility in from the start: lighting calibrated for the visually impaired, check-in desks scaled for wheelchair users, every pathway intentionally cleared, so no visitor has to negotiate the space.

The exhibitions move from context to human. A dimensional exploration of HQ2 maps how Amazon builds community wherever it operates, linking neighborhood-scale decisions to global impact. By The Numbers surrounds visitors with sculptural data visualizations: the $2 billion Amazon Housing Equity Fund, job creation figures, infrastructure investment, all rendered at a scale that makes the numbers something to walk through. Voices of Amazon invites guests into direct encounters with employees, small business sellers, community partners, and customers. They speak through interactive screens in their own language, describing invention and collaboration from the inside.

Behind every package is a network of people. HQ2 is where Amazon stops being a company you order from and becomes one you can actually know.
